Split

Split has a 1700-year-old history that began when Emperor Diocletian built his palace near the Roman city of Salona to spend his last years.

The Palace of Diocletian is therefore the landmark of Split and the heart of the city since the year 300. What was once a palace grew into a lively city full of tradition, history and cultural heritage. Since 1979, Diocletian's Palace, along with the historic center, has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List, as living witnesses to a glorious past that is still vibrant. Today, you can walk through this historic palace and discover Split's special history.

Fun fact: Split was an important filming location for Game of Thrones! Diocletian's Palace and its surroundings are especially frequent. Do you recognize the basement as the place where the dragons were imprisoned? For fans, there are special Game of Thrones tours and a museum!
